Janindra studied for his medical degree at Newcastle University, Australia and completed his general surgical training in Sydney. After becoming a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Janindra undertook full-time research for three years focusing on the genetics of colorectal cancer which led to the award of a PhD from the University of Sydney, Australia.


Janindra completed post-fellowship training, specialising in laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery at the Western Hospital, Melbourne, and then spent a year training in complex colorectal surgery at St Mark's Hospital. He was a consultant colorectal surgeon in Sydney, when he relocated to London with his family, to take up this prestigious post at St Mark's Hospital.
